A man with a history of erectile dysfunction has been granted Viagra’s patent for the first time, following a clinical trial suggesting it could be effective in treating impotence.

The man, who has since recovered from a heart attack, was in his 40s when he started using Viagra as part of his daily treatment for erectile dysfunction.

He was told that the medicine could help with impotence, and had to stop taking the tablets to see if it could work on its own.

The drug had already been available over the counter in the UK and it had already been licensed in several other countries.

The man had been taking the drug for four years, before the trial was started, so far. He now has no problems with the treatment, although he will continue to take it as prescribed.

The trial involved 18 men, all of whom had a history of erectile dysfunction. All were given Viagra tablets, one tablet a day, or a placebo. A second trial involved 19, each with a different dose, but none showed an effect.

The man is now eligible to apply for a supply of six tablets a week.

He will be given a free consultation to make sure that the tablets are effective and that he doesn’t have any side-effects. He can then pick up his tablets at his local pharmacy.

The man will need to take one tablet in the morning before the erectile dysfunction pills start to work, so he can take them at the same time every day to make up for the missing tablet.

He will then be given the placebo pill twice a day, for four weeks. After that, he can continue to take the Viagra tablets daily.

The medicine works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, which allows blood to flow into the penis when the man is sexually excited.

A further six tablets will be taken in a row on the morning of a sexual encounter, where he will take them and then take them on the following morning to work out if it will work on its own. The tablets are to be taken between 30 minutes before sex and between 10 minutes and 2 hours after sex, so they should start to work quickly.

This is the first clinical trial to be carried out to assess the effectiveness of Viagra in treating impotence.

Dr Peter Ellis, the consultant urologist with Sexual Medicine in London, who carried out the trial, said: “The results of the present study suggest that Viagra could be beneficial for men with erectile dysfunction, in particular those who have not responded well to other treatments.

“The fact that Viagra is effective on its own does not mean that the drug should be taken for a wider range of men.”

Dr Ellis added: “Erectile dysfunction is a common condition that affects many men and is often diagnosed through physical examination. In many cases, a man is treated with Viagra, or Viagra has helped him overcome his erectile dysfunction and then can return to normal.

“A number of other drugs, including Viagra have also helped men with erectile dysfunction. This is why it is important that men who have underlying health conditions such as diabetes or heart disease are treated with Viagra.”

The erection pills were taken in the morning, before sex and before going to bed.

The men in the study were advised that they could take the tablets for four weeks after they have tried Viagra. They were also advised to take the tablets as daily as prescribed.

The men in the study also had to stop taking the tablets to see if they would respond to the treatment.

It was also found that Viagra does not appear to have helped with impotence.

Dr Ellis said: “However, it is important to note that Viagra does have some risks, and some of these may include headaches, dizziness, flushing, nasal congestion, visual disturbances, and low blood pressure.

“If you are sexually active and have erectile dysfunction, you may have a very bad reaction to Viagra. It is important to seek advice from your doctor before taking any medication such as Viagra or any of its other medicines.

“The risk of headaches, dizziness, and low blood pressure is very low and most people who take Viagra should be aware that they are not taking any medication.
